I AM Creator
I visited Niagara Falls, Canada, when I was just 18 years old. I was excited to see the waterfalls but was not prepared for what I experienced. Standing on the edge of the cascade, close enough to almost reach over and touch the water, I remember thinking, “How could anyone deny a Creator after seeing this?” I stood, overwhelmed by the beauty of creation. I didn’t really form that thought though - it just popped in my head because it was the only conclusion to come to after seeing what I saw.
Niagara Falls is massive and powerful. Gorgeous. And I have honestly understood since that moment why people feel compelled to go over the falls. The powerful water is alive and beckons you to jump in…but that feeling is for another day when we dive into the Living Water. But for now, close your eyes and recall the most beautiful sunset, mountain view, or ocean shore you’ve ever seen. Take it in for just a moment. Do you think that the beauty happened by accident?
Creation points directly to a Creator - an intelligent designer. No sculpture creates itself. No music composes itself. Paint didn’t just jump onto the Sistine Chapel and paint intricate, life-like details. Each piece of art is created by an intelligent being. It’s not just a Bob Ross “happy accident.” Niagara Falls is too beautiful to be a mishap.
But who created it all? If you hold to a Biblical worldview, then the answer is clear: Yahweh. I AM. The God of the Bible.
“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.”
Genesis 1:1 NIV“Ah, Sovereign LORD, you have made the heavens and the earth by your great power and outstretched arm. Nothing is too hard for you.”
Jeremiah 32:17 NIV
For me, it is easier and less weird to believe in a higher, stronger, more powerful being than to think everything just accidentally happened. The human body itself is so intricate, every detail so precise and intentional. Our ability to think and reason and feel emotionally can’t be just chance. Nevertheless, I realize that our world turns its nose up to Creationism and counts it as foolishness. The world claims that science explains everything and that everything can be understood. To me, that seems arrogant. It makes me think of the story of Job in the Bible. For 37 chapters, God says nothing while Job laments, prays to God, and listens to his friends give advice. But because Job spoke to God in his pain and grief, God spoke to Job out of the storm and said:
“Where were you when I laid the earth’s foundation?
Tell me, if you understand.
Who marked off its dimensions? Surely you know!
Who stretched a measuring line across it?
On what were its footings set,
or who laid its cornerstone—
while the morning stars sang together
and all the angels shouted for joy?”
Job 38:4-7
I think it’s hilarious how God puts Job in his place. There’s a hint of sarcasm, if you may, when he says Job surely knows. He definitely didn’t know because he wasn’t there. Truthfully, you should read all of Job 38 and 39 to get the full picture of all that Job was not there for and all that God Almighty has purposefully done in creating the world. He’s a big God and reading those chapters will remind you that you are dust in comparison. There is no one alive that was there when the Earth was formed, and there is no way to test our beliefs or theories scientifically. No one can prove how the Earth was formed. It requires faith.
By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God’s command, so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible.
Hebrews 11:3
I don’t understand why science has been pitted against Creationism or Christianity because science can’t explain the beginning of time with any more certainty or evidence than the Bible does. Science is based on testable, observable information, and what is observable and able to be tested doesn’t go against the facts of the Bible. In fact, if you look at science through a Biblical worldview, it makes sense. (Side note: for understanding more about the truth, evidence, and apologetics of Creationism, I recommend the ministry Answers in Genesis. They have wonderful tools, resources, videos, and curriculum to help understand Creation from a Christian’s Biblical worldview.)
So to move forward, we must accept and believe that God is the Creator. God created the world and everything in it according to scripture.
The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things hold together.
Colossians 1:15-17
This scripture states that Jesus was there from the beginning. Everything was created through Him and for Him. That’s the purpose of it all - to point to God and give Him glory. And the part of creation made for Him includes us. We are designed to point others to God and give Him glory.
Last year, I read a book by Jen Wilkin called Ten Words to Live By. I highly recommend this deep dive into the Ten Commandments. One thing that stuck with me through the study is that God commanded us to not make any graven image to worship. We must remember not to put the creation before the Creator. Our Creator is greater than that which He has created. If we get that out of order, we are going to be wandering in the dark in our own sin and arrogance.
Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another. They exchanged the truth about God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator—who is forever praised.
Romans 1:24-25
I don’t want to be like these sinful people that Romans speaks about. I want to always remember that God is to be praised. Wilkin also points out in her book that God did not want any images made to worship, even of Himself, because he already stamped His image onto us. People - living, breathing, loving, people - are the best reflection of God, albeit still so far from perfect.
So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.
Genesis 1:27For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.
Psalm 139:13-14
Recognizing God as Creator signifies our reliance on Him. It is a critical belief. Not something we can be unsure of as a Christian. In John’s Revelation, the twenty-four elders declare:
“You are worthy, our Lord and God,
to receive glory and honor and power,
for you created all things,
and by your will they were created
and have their being.”
Revelation 4:11
The Bible says they say it again and again, day and night, never stopping. So it must be important, right? To declare God is Creator is to declare that He is above all things, all people. Colossians 17 from earlier states that He holds it all together. This is a core belief about who God is. It is hard to wrap our minds around an uncreated God who always was and always will be - a God who exists outside of time. But our lack of understanding does not in any way suggest or prove that to be untrue.
I want to encourage you to trust in the God of the Bible and Creation as it is revealed in God’s Word. Look through the lens of the Bible to understand the world around you.
Prayer:
Lord, I know that you are the Creator of everything. You are above all, and I praise you! Thank you for all you have made. Help me to give you glory in all I say and do. Amen.
